HOW WE BUILD THE FIELD GUIDE
Useful before clever.
Evidence before guesses.
MechaOBD publishes approachable diagnostic guides for everyday car owners. Our goal is to help you understand what your vehicle is reporting, preserve useful evidence, and choose a sensible next step.
What guides our work
Every article should answer a real question, explain enough to make the next decision safer, and avoid turning a trouble code into a parts recommendation. OBD-II data is evidence. It can narrow an investigation, but it cannot physically inspect a vehicle or guarantee a failed component.
How we research
We prioritize official vehicle and equipment documentation, government and regulatory material, standards bodies, and original product support information. We link important sources at the end of each guide so readers can inspect the underlying material.
Secondary sources may help us find a question or explain common owner confusion, but they do not outrank current manufacturer instructions or vehicle-specific service information.
Safety and limitations
Vehicle condition, symptoms, adapter support, and available data vary. Our guides distinguish stored, pending, and permanent codes; encourage readers to save evidence before clearing it; and call out situations that warrant stopping, reducing engine load, or seeking professional help.
Content is educational, not a vehicle-specific diagnosis. The owner’s manual and current service information remain the authority for the car in front of you.
Product and commercial transparency
MechaOBD is made by Starlight Industries LLC. Articles may link to the MechaOBD app, optional paid Diagnostic Reports, and compatible hardware. Hardware pages disclose affiliate relationships where applicable. Commercial relevance does not change the diagnostic standard: a recommendation should fit the reader’s vehicle and task.
Writing and review tools
Research and writing tools, including AI-assisted drafting, may be used to organize information. Before publication, content is checked against cited source material and current product behavior. We do not present AI output as a diagnosis or substitute it for physical testing.
Images and examples
Product images show actual MechaOBD screens or supported hardware where identified. Illustrative photographs are labeled in captions when they do not depict the exact warning or condition discussed. Diagnostic examples are simplified for education and do not predict the result for another vehicle.
Corrections
Automotive products, operating systems, and support guidance change. If you find an error, outdated link, or unclear safety statement, please contact MechaOBD support with the page and the detail that needs review. Material corrections are made in the article rather than hidden in a separate thread.
